How to: Make a French Market Basket

During our French Decadence theme on Facebook, I’ve been highlighting French-themed things.

Ooh la la!

This French Market basket is easy, cost-effective and will wow anyone as you’re strolling through the farmers market picking out fresh flowers and produce.

How to make it.

Go to your local thrift store and find the perfect basket. Thrift stores are the best place to look for baskets because they always have a plethora of sizes and shapes! And don’t worry about color because you can always paint the basket to match any color you want! Or add new color with ribbons and bows.

I found this little gem for $1.50 at my local Salvation Army. I loved the deep color and the width and height of the basket. As you can see it has its own handles on the sides and I just cut them off.

Step two is finding the handles that you want. I went to Joanne Fabrics to find the handles I wanted and the main part of the handles actually matched the color of the basket perfectly so it was a win-win for me! If you don’t find the handles you want at your fabric store, you can always snag a bag from the thrift store and remove straps from a bag there! Or create your own from fabric or leather. My handles were $7.50 and I painted over the white stripes so it wouldn’t distract from what I wanted to put in them.

Your final product will leave you feeling like a Parisian princess!
